What do you think of this solution?

Well, I was discussing to my colleagues back in school about my problem in making the weaker students understand intersection and union. A senior collegue told me instead of using the shading method to mark the area of intersection or union, she suggested to use the 'tick' method which I believe is less messy and clearer.

Komathi

Hi guys, sorry for the delay. Eventhough it is school holidays but I find that I am busier than how I used to be in my working days. Alright, coming back to the main aim of the blog, the sharing session. I have a problem in the topic sets, for me I find that this topic is easy to understand but my weaker students always get confused especially when they are required to shade the region involving union and intersection of sets. Can someone suggest to me, how I can teach better to help my weaker students.

LAW HUI LEH

Task 1:

One of my that went very well is the topic 'sets'. I teach this topic to the form two students. I used to teach them with a picture which shown a few kinds of animals in the jungle.

a. The ideas for this lessons came from 'mycd' which is the cd inside their textbook, there
have many activities and interesting questions that can attract students.

b. This lesson needs students to identify the ratio. Like example, they are asked to identify the
ratio between bears to tigers from the picture shown. So they need to count how many bears
and tigers are there in the picture. Let say we have two bears and four tigers, the answer in
the form of ratio in mathematics will be 2 : 4 or in the form of sentence 2 bears to four tigers.

c. I think this lesson is very successful for me because with the good and understanding
introduction can help the students know better what is the concept of 'sets'.

d. This is what i learnt from my experience, if you want your students understand and master
the skill, then you should present a good introduction before you go into the topic.

e. If i want to improve this lesson, i will ask them to surf the internet because there are so
many questions and activities about the topic or sometimes i will find and photocopy the
activities from the internet to the students.

f. I have been shared this experience with my friends.

Task 2:

One of the topic that is very challenging for me is the topic 'circles'.

a. The ideas for this lesson came from the internet and mostly i explain it with my own idea.
Like example find the area and circumference of circles, some of the students could not
differentiate and how to use the formula.

b. This topic is quiet difference from others topic because the questions come out in the PMR is
complicated.

c. -.

d. The experience that i learnt from this lesson is the students have to do a lot of questions and
we can also shown the real model so that they can understand better.

e. If i want to improve this lesson, i will ask from some experience teachers for their opinion
how to explain the area and circumference of circles for students better understanding.

f. No.

Task 2.

For me, topic that very challenging to teach is Geometrical Construction - Mathematics form 2.
The student must completely understand the concept and know the steps to draw based on questions given. Normally I'm using demonstration method where drawing make by me and students must follow to complete the drawing. I think this is the best way for students to improve their drawing skills . If there any method or new way of teaching this topic, hope u can share with me.

Task 1.

LOCI IN TWO DIMENSIONS

I have been teaching Mathematics since July 2000 until 2007. For the year 2008 I'm teaching ICTL for form 1 and form 2 students. Here i posted the presentation slides that was created in 2005.

by using MS Powerpoint presentation it is easy to show students what is 2 dimensional loci is all about. Its more efficient compared by using method chalk and talk. Student are able to understand quickly.

Types of loci.

How to put diagrams in your entry?

Hi everybody,

I think it is good to share this stuff with all of you - just in case you need to put any diagram(s) in your entry as an illustration to your presentation/discussion.

STEPS:
1. Draw your diagram(s) in PowerPoint file
2. View the slide
3. Printscreen the slide view (find for PrtSc/PrintScreen on one of your keyboard buttons -> Press the button
4. Open Paint program (if you do not know how to open it - click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Paint
5. Paste the prinstscreen of your slide show in Paint
6. Save it as JPEG (File -> Save As -> name the file (File name) -> Save as type: JPEG -> Save
7. Go to your blog -> New Post (or Edit Post, if you have already posted your entry but you want to add some diagrams -> click Add image icon (third icon from right)
8. A new window (Blogger - Upload image) will appear
9. Click Browse - find the file that you saved from Paint -> click Upload Image
10. Once it's done, the picture will be appeared in your posting box - you can easily drag the picture to the place you want it to be or alternatively you can cut the picture and paste it between paragraphs.
11. If you are satisfied with it, as usual click Publish Post.

Below is the example of a 'diagram' which I created using the steps above:

Good luck!

NB: I should thank Maslinda who asked me this question which I think will benefit others too. Well done, Lyneen!
